AN ERASED SA ROHM DAGGER WITH A STORY!!
I do like a story with a piece I buy, but the old adage goes ‘buy the item, not the story!’ However, this one seems to pan out. Here is a very nice, early SA dagger with an erased Rohm signature blade. The dagger has the small ‘Aesculap’ round trademark up very close to the crossguard. They only used this small mark on the Rohm pieces and Aesculap is a rare maker anyway. They also used to finish their grips with a lacquer polish and this has the remains of that too. Dagger itself is very nice indeed and never been cleaned or apart. No damage to the wood grip. The blade is also very nice and the obverse has a very bright and clean, near mint surface. Deep and clear Alles fur Deuchland script. The reverse has had the Rohm dedication and signature ground off. Not factory done!! The SA member did it himself and he made a reasonably rough job of it. You can still see portions of the dedication, part of the first letter at the top and another part near the end. The Aesculap trademark is untouched.
Now to the scabbard and here is where the story fits. All nickel fittings are present with all nickel screws. The original brown surface finish is also present but has ‘spidered’ on the surface.
Two thirds of the way down on the right hand scabbard edge, there is an obvious large indentation. You can see it’s been hit with either shrapnel or even a bullet! Difficult to tell. It has not affected the internal workings of the scabbard and the dagger fits in perfectly!!
The story I was told is that this was bought back as a souvenir and came from a bombed out house in Northern Germany. I can’t verify this of course, but the scabbard damage is commensurate with something like this happening.
Personally I think it’s really super and a great bit of history. You can either leave it exactly like it is or replace the scabbard with a period piece and you would have a really nice, rare erased Rohm dagger.
