EARLY THIRD REICH POLICE BAYONET.

A very good example of the early all nickel Police bayonets that were converted from the longer Weimar period police bayonets. Nice pommel in the shape of an eagles head and crossguard decorated with acorns cast into the metal. Stag horn grip plates with the aluminium Third Reich police eagle. Two aluminium grip rivets and one tell-tale redundant Hol under after where the grips were re-sized and re-riveted. The reverse of the crossguard and the top scabbard fittings are stamped with matching issue numbers S.M.V.2217. There is more information available now which can identify what these letters and numbers mean. These letters mean… ‘Schutzpolizei Muenster, Revier [district] V, weapon number 2217’. Muenster is in the northern part of Germany. These were originally applied in the Weimar era and have no relevance after they were re-issued in the Third Reich period. Scabbard is black leather with upper and lower scabbard fittings attached with nickel staples. Blade is in very nice condition with full heavy nickel plating. The very tip shows where the original long blade was cut down and re-profiled. The riccasso’s are both marked with makers marks. One side has the Alcoso scales trademark and the other has the original full company name of Alexander Coppell Solingen and a repeat of the scales trademark in the center.
